I just booked my flights for our third Unleashed workshop! I really love teaching and learning with other photographers and my co-instructors Barbara Breitsameter and Bev Hollis always make it so much fun. This April, here in Dallas, we had 20 photographers fly in from all over — and it was amazing how many friendships were born from our shared passion for animals and photography.
This next Unleashed is going to be a special treat. We’ve expanded it to a full three days and we’re based at the beautiful Landsdowne Resort outside of Washington DC. This is going to be a fabulous luxury getaway combined with lots of photography in the beautiful rolling hills of northern Virginia — an IRRESISTABLE combination! If you’re a photographer and you’re interested in learning fine art pet photography – there is simply no better place to do it!
We have agreed to teach a one-day abbreviated version of Unleashed at Imaging USA in January for those of you that can’t get away in September!
It’s my favorite time of year!
This is Morgan, who stopped by to model for the Tiny Dog Calendar and try out our new wallpaper backdrop– she’s got some star power, don’t you think? Much too hot to play outside, so we crank up the air conditioning and stay in the studio. We unveil the fun new holiday card designs, and meet lots of new furry friends. And yes, cats can play, too. Reserve your session right away — we often fill up all of our openings the first week.

Katie is a Hurricane Katrina survivor who was very fortunate to be rescued. These portraits were shot in our natural light room in the studio and she felt right at home. She is smart and oh-so-talented as a model! She is posing for The Tiny Dog Calendar — and currently seeking representation (wink wink).

I had a great session with my nephew Bo and his new puppy ( yes, a 65 lb. puppy!) Kelly. The two of them are made for each other! This is a great example of what’s possible with the gentle natural light in the front shooting area of the studio. The light floods in and gives the feel of a softly lit room at home. Thanks Bo and Kelly for being such great models!

It’s no secret that I love dachshunds…. but what IS a secret is that we’re having a special day JUST for doxies at the studio. In celebration of the long and short of it all – with proceeds going to Dallas Fort Worth Dachshund Rescue. Here’s the promo. Hope you and your doxie can come!

My friends at Dallas Dog Life are publishing a directory ! They have lots of good information and fun activities on their website, but the directory is fabulous. I keep mine in the car!
“This first edition includes more than 200 DFW dog-friendly business listings, emergency veterinary clinic information, informative articles, and more! You can’t beat the price – only $5 for a directory packed full of information that any local dog-lover needs close at hand. Buy one for yourself and a friend and have the peace of mind that $1 of the purchase price – yes, a full 20%! – goes to the SPCA of Texas to benefit their spay/neuter program.”

I often get calls from people who have just had bad news from the vet. As heartbreaking as it is — I consider it very important work. We always make room on the calendar for these emergency sessions. Just before the holidays we photographed a 17 year old dachshund, and he’s still doing well. But two weeks ago we photographed this handsome guy, Eddie, who was only 8 – and by the time his proofs were ready he was gone. He was much loved. So rest in peace, Eddie — now you’re a puppy again!

This is Eryn and her dachshund Elvis — they were amazing! People often ask me why I choose to photograph two subjects that most photographers consider difficult, but there is a special kind of magic that happens when we put kids and dogs together that makes it worth the extra effort. It’s a combination of their wisdom and their innocence I think…
